EV Charger Installation FAQ

Your EV Charging Questions, Answered

We answer the most common questions about electric vehicle charger installation, charging speeds, safety, and system requirements.

Our aim is to give you clear, practical information so you understand how EV charging works, what to expect during installation, and how a professionally installed charger will improve convenience, safety, and long-term charging efficiency.

Charging your electric vehicle at home is significantly more economical than filling up with petrol or diesel. On average, a full charge for a typical EV costs between £8-£15 when charging overnight on an off-peak electricity tariff, compared to £70-£100 to fill a comparable petrol car. This works out to approximately 3-5p per mile for electric charging versus 15-20p per mile for petrol vehicles. By switching to a dedicated EV energy tariff, you can reduce your charging costs even further, with some tariffs offering rates as low as 7p per kWh during off-peak hours. Over a year, most EV drivers save between £800-£1,200 on fuel costs alone.

Government incentives for home EV charger installations vary depending on your location and property type. While the previous EVHS (Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme) grant has ended for homeowners, there are still grants available for renters and flat residents through the EV Chargepoint Grant for flat owners, landlords and tenants. Some local councils also offer additional support schemes. Business and workplace charging may qualify for the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) which provides up to £350 per socket. Additionally, certain energy suppliers offer incentives or discounted installation packages when you switch to their EV-specific tariffs. We can help you identify all available grants and incentives in your area during your consultation.

A tethered EV charger comes with a charging cable permanently attached to the unit, while an untethered charger requires you to use your own cable each time you charge. Tethered chargers offer maximum convenience – simply plug in and go without handling cables – and are ideal if you have one EV or multiple vehicles with the same charging socket type. Untethered chargers provide more flexibility for households with multiple EVs that may have different socket types or for future-proofing as charging standards evolve. They're also more compact and can be more aesthetically pleasing. Consider a tethered charger if convenience is your priority, or an untethered unit if you value flexibility and have limited space or multiple vehicle types.

A typical residential system takes 1–3 days to install, depending on roof size, type, and complexity. This includes scaffolding setup, mounting panels, electrical connections, and full system testing to ensure maximum efficiency.

In most cases, installing a home EV charger is considered permitted development and does not require planning permission in England, Scotland, and Wales. However, if your property is a listed building, located in a conservation area, or if the charger will be installed on a wall facing a highway, you may need approval. We'll assess your specific situation during the site survey and advise you on any permissions needed. Additionally, we handle all necessary notifications to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) as part of our installation service.

Unfortunately, we can only install home EV chargers if you have dedicated off-street parking such as a driveway or garage. This is due to safety regulations and legal restrictions that prohibit trailing cables across public pavements or footpaths. If you don't have off-street parking, we can advise you on alternative charging solutions including workplace charging options or finding your nearest public charging points.

Once you've approved your quote and made payment, we typically schedule your installation within 1-2 weeks, subject to DNO approval and installer availability. The actual installation work usually takes between 2-4 hours depending on the complexity of your setup. We always aim to complete the work in a single visit, and you'll be able to start charging your vehicle immediately after installation and testing.
